Would love to, but I'll just be getting back from my AZ trip on Monday and trying to figure out how to fix all the problems I created while playing out here! (both on the truck and at work)

Hey guys & gals,

After seeing the devastion caused by the typhoon in the Phillipines I started thinking about a way to help the victims and thought that we as a club may be able to something. Perhaps a dinner fundraiser or any ideas people want to come up with.

Our very own Ron Boston may be able to help direct funds...may be even the LRClub of Manila could be our liason.

I would be willing to donate my culinary abilities and host a fundraising dinner.

Thoughts?

Thanks Enrique for your kind thoughts and offer. I remember reading post-Katrina, the Philippines sent 25 of its very own Search and Rescue workers to New Orleans, and donated $25,000 to the victims of Katrina. It's a poor country, but rich in culture, warm people and a strong supporter of the USA; did its best to help out during Katrina.

Now they need help. Sad situation indeed. I donated to Doctors w/o Borders. After looking at their financials with only 1.3% of funds go to admin, 12% fundraising and rest over 86% directly to programs - seems to be less admin costly org of the ones I looked at. And as we speak, they have deployed team already - see link: https://www.doctorsw...&cat=field-news

I'd like to donate more to Doctors w/o Borders - perhaps your idea Enrique of a dinner fundraising is worth looking into; all funds can go directly to Doctors w/o Borders. Allows us to all get together also as a club and bring guest/friends/family.

My thoughts are dinner and a raffle; folks can donate more if they want. I can reach out to Tepui, BajaRack and Goal Zero and a few others for donations. May not be a tent but perhaps an RTT awning, gift cert from BajaRack and item from Goal Zero, etc.. I have contacts @ Zazzle and see if we can get special event shirt for the fundraising listing our club, company donors and Mexxis for helping out.

I will reach out to LR PI and ask if they have any mission plans to head out there.

Open to ideas; we do need to make this happen quickly for couple of reasons: 1) help is needed sooner vs later, 2) Thanksgiving Holiday is just around the corner and afraid folks calendars will be booked.

I am proposing Friday next week November 22 or Saturday Nov 23.

Ron

Very interested in this idea and in helping. I would be available Friday, 11/22, but not the 23rd. I like the DWB option because of the known funnel of funds, i.e. to the folks in need. Thanks, Enrique, for posting and thinking and thanks, Ron, for always being ready to jump.

Ron, Let's do this! I've spoken to a few customers at Mexxi's and they would be very willing to come to a dinner at the restaurant, I could ask the landlord to let me use the empty space next door to mexxi's.

I can do a paella & tapas menu and with so many wine producers in the club, perhaps someone will donate a few bottles of their own brew.

Saturday 23 would be good (sorry Griff :) ) but if that is too soon, we can talk about a different date.

I've reached out to Robby from Land Rover Club of the Philippines and waiting for reply.

We may have to move this in Dec and not this coming weekend; that's ok I hope since it will take some time to organize this dinner, and get proper attention and attendance. Plus any help is never too late. Thanks again Enrique for the offer, and Mark and others for your support.

Donations are pouring into the Philippines, but logistics e.g. getting food into the area have been difficult and slow as I understand w/downed trees, debris blocking roads.... I also understand work is underway (again slow) to help put the dead to rest, and help families identify bodies as the recovery effort continue.

The mission/project I have in mind is for Solar manufacturer/retailer companies like Goal Zero, and satellite phone communication provider like Spot to partner w/a car company e.g. Land Rover and charity org already on the ground in PI e.g. UNICEF. It would entail driving to remote areas in the Philippines, setting up communication station (aka tent), and providing help w/victims and their families stay in touch w/families around the world via Sat phone or internet connection (powered by solar).

However, I can see the sensitivity and potential negative view taking this as an opportunity for advertisement; but I think it can be done w/respect to the situation.

Goal Zero: http://www.goalzero....zero-story.html

Spot: http://www.findmespo...dex.php?cid=108 (I've used the SPOT in the PI during my visit 3 years ago; I am sure their new Sat phone will work also)

UNICEF: http://www.unicef.or...ines_70952.html

Enrique, I am planning to have lunch @ Mexxis this Friday, hope to catch-up and discuss this further. C yah!

Looks like Enrique we are on! We now have a platform or reason w/the LRCP for the dinner fundraiser; do you think we can pull it off this Saturday?

Enrique and anyone, do we know anyone who can donate bottles of wine for this dinner? How about dessert? Raffle items - I can work on it.

LRCP has received support from a fuel company called Petron [480,000 PH Pesos or $11,000 US Dollar]. Also the Land Rover dealership in PI donated food for all volunteers. And the Angel Brigade for the relief goods to be distributed. Angel Brigade and LRCP has moved over 20 tons of relief goods by vessel to Leyte already; and is working to move more relief bags by early next week.

Robby's response from the Land Rover Club of the Philippines [LRCP] next mission below.
_ _ _ _

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your expression of support!

The Land Rover Club of the Philippines [LRCP] will operate around 24 vehicles for transportation services for the workers from the International Aid Agencies at Tacloban, Leyte for the period November 20 to 30.

We will have 2 convoys travel 1,000 kilometers south, including a ferry crossing, up to Leyte. LRCP will be reporting to the Office of Civil Defense, Philippine Department of Defense.

LRCP is soliciting funding for the ferry crossing at Matnog, Sorsogon to Allen, Samar; and its return voyage. The cost of the ferry crossing is estimated to be 6,000 PH Pesos [about $140 US Dollar] per vehicle one way, or 12,000 PH Pesos per vehicle, two ways. We anticipate a total cost of 288,000 PH Pesos [approximately USD $6,500] for all 24 vehicles.

The Land Rover Owners Club of Singapore, the Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia, and Rovernuts from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia have all expressed their support and pledged to fund the mission to Tacloban.

Any financial support from you and our rovernuts friends will be highly appreciated.

If you want to do another project, let me know your thoughts. I hope to point you in the right direction.

Regards,

Robby

For every $140 we raise, it will cover the cost of the vehicle ferry ride one-way. The mission is to provide transportation services for the workers from the International Aid Agencies at Tacloban, Leyte for the period November 20 to 30 to remove areas in the Samar also hit by the typhoon - see attached map.

Anything you buy on GoalZero.com [GZ] or barebonesliving.com, today through December 31, 2013, will be matched dollar-for-dollar in solar panels, power, lights, and Barebones shelters.

Last year GZ helped raise almost $600,000 in product for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. With that we were able to light thousands of homes and empower the community.

Hey guys... any updates on dinner plans... We could donate about 6 or 8 bottles of wine for the event... just let us know. We'd like to help out if we can. It's not our own brew, but from some local wineries where we are members.

Wow! Awesome RedRover; we certainly want to make sure your company gets recognition for the 6-8 bottles of wines. I talked to Carlos (Enirque's brother) yesterday; Enrique is traveling but let me catch-up with him today. Obviously, we are a time crunch to do the following:

Find a place for the dinner (Mexxis or next door to Mexxis)
Food and Chef (thanks to Enrique)
Wine (RedRover)
Beer and soda (let me work my magic e.g. Pacificos - smile)
Marketing to get attendees.

Seating will be limited to the size of the room but looking for good donation ratio per seating. I think if we can get $140 x 10 one-way or $280 ea r/t x 5 ferry ride (or more) would be good conservative target amount given short amount of time and resources. So far - excellent response.

Thank Ron. No cognition necessary, just a personal donation from our collection to a good cause. :-)

If you can give me an idea of the menu selection, my husband and I can review the pairing choice.

Looking forward to it!

Thanks.

Thanks everyone for your response!

Ron, 11/23 is srtill doable but if we move it to 11/30/or 12/30 we may have better attendance., I have plans for 12/07 but I can move that without a problem. Sp pick any of those dates.

Erin, Thanks for your kind offer! The menu would be Spanish Paella Mixta with lots of seafood, poultry, spicy spanish chorizo and pork. For tapas I'm thinking roasted pimentos on a toasted peasant bread with a dollup of aioli and prawns sauteed in olive oil with garlic a mild morita peppers finish with a dash of Jerez. you decide what pair well. (learned to prepare some of these dishes during my stay in Barcelona).

Great Enrique! Yes, I agree with moving it up to have better attendance.

If we can do it 12/07, that would work better for me. So this Sat 11/23, too soon; 11/30 is Thanksgiving Wknd - folks might be own of town. So the next Saturday 12/07 is best.

Couple of questions for you:
1) How much room or seats do we have (based on the place you pick)?
2) We have wine donation from RedRover (awesome); my family is willing to donate the cases of Pacifico beer, and juice for the kiddos.
3) Can we start pre-selling tickets (based on your answer to #1) so we can send the funds sooner (between now and Nov 30th)?
4) I will be at Mexxis this Friday and we can discuss how much to start the dinner tickets?
5) I will reach out to Evan from Tepui and ask for product donation as door prize and any other vendors willing...
6) I can bring my Camel Trophy truck for show and tell during the dinner
7) We can also reach out to Expedition Portal and solicit for attendees
8) Folks don't have to attend the dinner to donate; if they can't make 12/07 and willing to donate funds, much appreciated

Any other ideas and did I miss anything else.
