Backstory: My wife's family has been camping out in Lassen National Forest north of Lake Almanor between Chester and Lassen National Park for around the last 50 years or so. My father in law makes the trip up every year as his brother lives down in Forest Ranch and has a cabin up at the Feather River home sites north of Chester. We normally go up about every other year and dispersed camp in the National Forest, but haven't been up in the last three due to other things going on during the summer. This year we are heading up the week of your Oregon Trip (kind of gutted, wanted to tag along on that one :( )

There's not much as far as fun trails in the immediate area where we normally camp, mostly just fire roads that I've explored already on 2 wheels and 4. I was thinking about heading down and checking out the High Lakes OHV Area. Anyone familiar with the area and have any experience with the trails?

If anyone who's not going on the Oregon trip wants to head out and do a little wheeling in the area let me know. We'll be up there the 14th to the 20th of june

Rupert - You're thinking about Garrett with the white D1 and trailer. Although I'm looking at a M416 right now, just need to sell a car that I have sitting around to be able to afford it.

I was looking at going on the Oregon trip but it just so happens that it coincides with our family trip up to that neck of the woods. Just not in the cards this year..

Let's talk about if/how we might be able to combine this with the Sierra trip.

(Almanor and surrounding area is a hidden gem. My wife's family has been spending time up the (LAW) for generations. Chester is like Shaver but a little bigger main drag. The route in 89s through Quincy is beautiful! The idea of seeing that country from one of the many for roads etc... (vs. Pavement) is a goal. Thanks!!

Chester is a fun little town. My wife's grandparents stumbled into the area one year when they were on their way back home from a trip with their RV club and were looking for a place to camp for the night. My father in law has been going up there pretty much every year for the past 50 years. That area has a special place in the hearts in minds of her family, so much so that her Aunt and Uncle were married on the shore of Willow Lake. My wife and kids look forward to going to the Pine Shack every time we are up there. We normally go up for the fourth of july and the little parade they put on. This year with the rest of our family we normally go up there with the schedule just doesnt work out to make the fourth so we're going earlier. There's plenty of great little spots to camp and go exploring up in the woods there.

We only wish it was a little closer. For us down here in socal it takes about 11 hours or so to make it up there, and then you still have to set up your tent and get your campsite sorted. Makes for a long day.

I do plan on doing some exploring of some new to me areas while I'm up there so I'll report back on anything I find.

For anyone that cant make the Oregon trip and would like to do some exploring during the week I'll be up in that neck of the woods and able to get out and about the 14th through the 19th. Going to check out the High Lakes OHV area one day and another day I have a mellow dirt only loop planned to check out three of the fire watch towers in that area.

My daughter may jump in her envoy when she gets home and race up there... she's missing Almanor sumthin' fierce and wants to go trekking (backpacking to the rest of the world...). This would work for her ;-)

Unfortunately not, we head south for home on the 20th. I really wanted to go on the Oregon trip but our family trip is set in stone due to vacation time having to be requested way far in advance (ER nurse and Daycare Provider). So I will make the best of it and do some exploring up in that neck of the woods..

Not sure if I can take time off yet but would like to also explore High Lakes area. Would probably camp a night or two but was wondering if there are any hotels near by?
