Fair warning to you brave souls willing to follow along: This will be a sloooow build and will be a mix of catch-up maintenance, preventative maintenance, and offroad improvements. Mostly, the purpose of this thread will be to document the tiny things I do and the learnings that come with them, so there will be some minutia that might be left out of other build threads. Also, I'll keep a running list of various maintenance items that need to be addressed.

With that said, here....we....gooooo!

Catching Up To Now

  • January 31, 2015: Stole purchased 1994 Range Rover Classic SWB with 163k miles for the whopping price of $600. Clean title, current registration, all stock, still on air suspension, always Bay Area car. Drove it home.

  • February 28, 2015: Replaced fusible link bundle and a variety of fuses. Celebrated numerous electronics working right again! Replaced several exterior bulbs.

  • March 3, 2015: Removed transfer case shift lock solenoid.

  • March 6, 2015: Removed front air dam and fog lights.

  • March 23, 2015: Wired in 4-flat trailer wiring, splice free! See DIY here: (http://tinyurl.com/qe38tzc) Also drained and filled front diff, discovered axle seal leak into swivel ball.

  • April 6, 2015: Retrieved variety of items from Pick N Pull - various interior trims, latch assemblies, new headliner, etc

High Priority Repairs Needed

  • NCLR Membership (just for you, Tom & Jared) - DONE May 19, 2015

  • Transfer case viscous coupling (failed open)

  • Brake pads

  • Swivel ball seals and axle seals

  • Air conditioning. Undetermined issue, compressor engages fine

  • Air suspension. Clear soft fault and diagnose.

Low Priority Repairs Needed

  • Power steering leak (small)

  • Coolant leak (minimal)

  • Clean and re-seat wheel speed sensors for traction control

  • Adjust and tighten steering box (large dead zone on center)

Preventative Maintenance Planned

  • General fluid refresh- oil, transmission, tcase, diffs, brake, coolant

  • Replace plugs and wires

  • Check engine timing

  • Replace air filter

  • Clear fuel tank vent lines

Interior Repairs & Upgrades Planned

  • Fix drivers door latch difficulties

  • Brace cubby box to support window switch panel

  • Replace passenger seat switch

  • Tighten and Loctite both front seat mounting screws

  • Lube seat rails and sunroof path

  • Retrofit Homelink panel

  • Replace rear wiper switch (and cross fingers rear wiper then works)

  • Replace headliner (already acquired headliner in great shape, need to find fabric for sunroof panel)

  • Replace front right window regulator

  • Replace cabin air filter (does the RRC have one??)

  • Mobile HAM radio and roof rack mounted antenna

Offroad Modifications & Accessories Planned

  • Tires (acquired barely used Cooper Discoverer ATR 245/75/16 Load E on May 8 2015 for $150 for 4. Need 2 additional for spares.)

  • 2" body lift

  • Explore extended bellows for air springs. Or, potential coil conversion if EAS difficulty.

  • Spacers behind bump stops to ensure clearance for larger tires with EAS fully deflated.

  • Rock sliders

  • Diff guards

  • Fuel tank guard

  • Steering component guard

  • Mud flaps F&R

  • Raised intake (planning DIY with 3" exhaust tubing)

  • Breather kit for wading, and confirm all underbody electrical connections well sealed

  • Full length roof rack (planning DIY - thread here:http://tinyurl.com/pl35fqf)

  • LED lights mounted front and rear on roof rack

  • Brush bar if good deal found

  • Limb risers

  • Rear bumper (make TBD) plus custom rear tire carrier

  • Hi-lift jack

  • Shovel

  • Snow chains

  • First Aid Kit

$600?  Yeah, that was a steal.  Although laying out the full build-list like that is a bit daunting.  It would have been even worse if you put a dollar amount to each, although it would have been interesting to see how much under (because it's always under) the estimates turned out to be in the end.

Yes, it is a bit daunting, but I want to start with the end in mind. I'm going to log $ amounts as I do things. Since my wife may look at the build thread, I have no interest in putting all the $ values up front for a grand total before this even gets going.

I stopped updating my list a couple years ago. No big purchases since then.

Hmmm, seems it pastes my spreadshet ok, but when it gets posted the formatting is deleted.

I don't keep track so I can legitimately say I don't know how much I've spent on my truck when my wife asks :) plausible deniability ftw..

I've heard that one for lots of things from Motorcycles to sports cars to tools, etc  I'm lucky that Michele has never said anything about my toys.  In fact, sometimes she gets frustrated if I spend too much time trying to find a 'deal' and just tells me to get the blasted thing and be done with it.

That Classic looks like it would have about 10* of articulation with those massive tires.

These are similar to my "crystal ball" dream.

The cost overruns begin already. Forgot to add lights and herry cans to the to-do list. I think it will be interesting to see how many things I need as I go along that I didn't have on my starting list. I know that there will also be several camping equipment upgrades and storage containers but I'm going to leave those off the tally since they're not really "Rover" parts (which keeps my total lower for the wife. :D )

Also - gas cans. I need some edumacation here. 5Gal Jerry cans seems pretty pricey for what they are. Is there some good reason why not to use something like this, which barely costs more than one Jerry can for 4x the capacity? For $80 for all 4 cans and lids I could have 15 gallons of gas and 5 gallons of water/coolant at the ready with lids that properly seal. http://tinyurl.com/laclble with these lids http://tinyurl.com/omvgxxh There's also this for the jerry can form factor: http://tinyurl.com/ob5xxgm

I know the spouts are garbage but I have good spouts at home, and the HPDE holds up pretty well to the elements in my experience. So, am I missing something important about the jerry cans?

Bought my Jerry cans right before the "ban" on them. Used the red Blitz cans (w/ stupid CARB nozzle) before that and they leaked all over the truck on my first Mojave Rd. trip. Not the same as what you posted, but the NATO style Jerry can seems to hold the best and never leak (I have a couple extra gaskets just in case). If you've had success with the other types give them a try.

I'd forego spouts all together and use the Super Siphon. No need to lug a full gas can off the roof when you can let gravity do the work for you, plus it's faster. I had a CARB spout on the Blitz cans. The top of the can hit the body of the truck and couldn't get all of the gas out of the can. Oh and they sit taller on the roof as well, where the NATO cans could even be laid on their sides for a super low profile.

Most trips you'll barley need an extra can of fuel. DV or Mojave it's worth having 2-3 for fuel and one for water (with extra water inside the truck/cooler).

Brenton,

I hop not.  Maltly they're just for show.  Specifically you can use gravity to empty them, or pour them.  Best to fill them up a head of time (ask Don!).  Sometimes you need to filter the contents.
