Im thinking my stock alternator is insufficient to charge my dual agm's. Also wondering if the voltage regulator may be too low and not ideal for them. Has anhone changed to something better?

Think I swapped to a higher output (120amp) Bosch alternator for my dual batteries.  It's been a couple of years since I did the switch but it happily charges my batteries

With AGMs you might indeed be able to use a higher charging voltage, but you would need to go to an adjustable regulator. They can probably take a faster charge via higher current as well. Unfortunately I don't know what the hot ticket is for an RRC.

back to this. i can tell my alternator is not putting out enough juice.  does anyone know if a P38 alternator will bolt up to a 95 RRC?  the electrical part i can adapt. just trying to find something that will bolt up.

I don't know about a P38 but I know that D1s, RRCs and maybe DII are interchangeable. I don't see why it wouldn't work on a P38.  Antonio, Rob or Ted ay be abe to give you the right answer. Good luck!

i am thinking of trying the CS130 delco alternator as an option too. i have read that one from a saturn will fit too.

mean green has one.  i'm getting more info on it.  has anyone tried one of their units?  they claim 200A.  stock pully, not overdriven.

That's a lot 'o amps you're talking there.  I'm not familiar with their unit, but that's about as big as anything I can think of.  I would think they'd need a larger case to handle the heat.  Maybe a remote mount regulator as well, which wouldn't be a bad thing if it was also adjustable.

 

fwiw Balmar is usually the first place I look when hunting aftermarket alternators, but mostly that's because they offer ignition protected marine stuff.  They also have standard automotive gear as well, though I have no idea how they stack up on pricing.  The marine stuff is brutal....4-figures for an alternator.

One other concern is belt slippage if they are using the stock pully.  Usually something that big needs dual belts or a big serpentine just for enough drive friction.

ok, so got one on and running.  talked to Premier power welder in socal.  i have a denso unit with an external regulator.  it sits a little higher so i had to cut the fan shroud. also the pulley is smaller so i need to correct my tach signal.

I like the remote regulator.  Should run cooler and it can be replaced easily if it fails.  Is it also adjustable?  It would be nice if you could fine-tune it to your choice of battery.
