HI just moved to the Bay area.  Long time early 110 owner.

My truck is a 84 2 door 110 soft top.  200tdi/lt77 five speed, full width intercooler, pump tune, 3in turbo back exhaust

We took 2nd place at the Diesel trucking nationals in NJ right before we moved

Now living in los gatos, truck is cali plated/insured/ect

Im looking for a shop to possibly do a frame swap for me.  Not being at my old house in NY with a full shop and lift, i cant do it myself.  Looking for suggestions on shops or members who are competent and can do a swap from an early truck.

First of all welcome,

second of all how did you manage to register a diesel 84 in California?

and third of all, a few in the club have shops in your area, so I am sure they will post here about the possibility of helping you out.

Cool rig.

Tim Scully is one who is doing some frame swaps and engine swaps on defenders and series trucks. He has a shop for side work and projects. We can connect you too, he's in the Sacramento area but does work all over.

Welcome! I think a few of us saw you guys on 17 heading south a couple months ago. There were 3 of us: DII, LR3 and a LR4 heading down to Santa Cruz on a Saturday morning.

I think your plates said something like "it's legal" or something.

I remember now!  The license plate... Its Legal or Its Real or something like that.  My husband waved at them!  So awesome!

Welcome to the bay area.  Now about that NY hat in the photo.... :excl:

Despite that, looks like a really cool rig.  As for a frame swap, Tim could certainly help you out though he's a couple hours up from you on the NE side of Sacramento.  A little closer would be CT Autowerks in Walnut Creek.  Colin Brown is the owner and has done plenty of Rover work (and not just on his own Rovers  ;) )  He's a long time club member and enthusiast...you know, aside from being a professional wrench

Give him a call:  925-939-6769

Hi all! sorry for the late reply! i thought i set this to send me emails.

Yes that was my old plate "ITSLEGAL"  my NY plate.  Ive since registered and insured it here in cali on a standard plate.  I did a TON of research before bringing my truck to Cali.  I found a bunch of info about owning a vehicle out of state for a a minimum of two years that is it then ok to bring to cali w/o issues.  I called the DMV and a bunch of DMV courier services telling them Exactly the nature of my truck  and if it would be legal here.

Long story short, took it to a courier.  Proved that I have owned it for nearly 8 years, got the VIN checked there and they submitted the paperwork for me.  It took a few extra days due to the non standard vin but was painless.

If it was a gas powered truck it would have been much harder  since i would have had to proved a smog cert and gone through that level of scrutiny.  But since it diesel and pre 97, no smog.  I also got it registered as a SUV instead of a truck to avoid the required weight certificate, I just put a few extra ratty seats in the load space when i went to the courier.

Oddly enough I got stopped in Santa Clara two days after getting it cali plated, by a santa clara police officer who just wanted to see it and tell me about his CJ8 scrambler.  Nice people here!

And yes we say you guys on rt 17, we were headed to santa cruz to check out apartments and i still had the 1.2 Disco T case in my truck.  It was nearly undriveable up the grades  since i detuned the pump to avoid coal rolling every tesla and prius in the state and getting the smog police on my ass.  Ive since swapped back to a 1.4 defender case and pushed the fueling back up a tad and its crushing it again.

Thanks for the info about the shops, ill get in touch.  Anyone doing a frame group buy or have a container coming over?

I hear all you need to do is put a veggie oil sticker on the back, then the greens will love you.

Not sure where I got that idea....

that's interesting diesl is easier to reg in CA... i've read through the tread on D-S about registering Defender in Cali.

Anyways, good on you for getting through that whole car reg process!

The only things that makes it possible are the availability of the dmv courier service here in cali and that pre 97 diesel does not require smog. A gas truck would have definitely been flagged by a smog inspector, even more so a rhd.

If the truck wasn't in my name would have been a totally different story as well. I was lucky to have something that I figured could make it through.

On another topic, trying to find someone bringing in a container has been a huge hassle. I may have to do a direct import ina ltl and it will be super costly.

When the time comes I may need to split a container for a 110 import. That's if I don't RoRo. So awesome you did it with a courier. That's exactly what a few people have told me they did recently.
