Today we put a bumper on Alyson's truck.  When she left, she heard a light tapping sound at low speeds that could be heard from the center console area.  It was road speed related, not engine speed.  After driving a few miles and getting everything hot we couldn't hear it anymore.

I actually thought it most sounded like a failing speedo cable, but I don't think the D2 has a mechanical speedo - I believe it's electronic so no cable to make noise.

Of course on a D2 you always think about u-joints.  I asked her when they were last greased and she thought it was done at the last service.  We pulled it back in the shop and crawled under.  I pumped a couple shots into the front u-joint, but the joints at the t-case are non-serviceable.  Worse yet, I actually found one of the caps had a small chunk missing out of it.

I don't know if that u-joint was the cause of the noise, but clearly they need to be replaced.  It's not a huge job, but not something she's going to take on at her apartment and she doesn't want to drive all the way up here again to do it.  Anybody closer want to help her change some u-joints?

Graeme, do you happen to have them in stock?

Thanks again Don!! Well I made it home so I think I can drive back up there unless someone local can help me.

By the way, here's that brand new bumper

Too bad we didn't have it parked in the driveway next to my LR3 in the daylight.  They're almost the same color and with ARBs on the front they both look similar.  Good example of the similarities and differences between the 2 and 3.

a side note     I called Tom Woods this morning and he does not have our club listed in his discount list.....he said if we send our details including a name list he provides a $40 discount plus maybe some yearly goodies for our rally.     He did give me a $20 discount just because I said I was a member in a  4X4 club.    Very nice guy.

Yes I confirmed that as well. Tom, they said the vouchers were sent to you, do you have them? Jason and I will need a voucher each to send back in order to get the rebate.

Just saw this post, but I am able to help you out and I am only in Mountain View. Let me know what works for you. Happy to do it.

I plan to swing by after the MORG to check this out; not that you need more body under your truck to R&R a u-joint. :)

Also, I have a few more in my office if someone needs one.

No, but it always helps to have a line of armchair mechanics at the ready. "That's a great ratchet job you're doing on that bolt. Maybe another couple of turns there... that's right. There you go..."

I can bring the spare wheel carrier for the D90 that needs to be installed, and we'll have 2 projects going on Jared & Erin's driveway. :)
