How much are you asking and where are you located?  I hear there is a home for old Land Rovers in Walnut Grove ....

Graeme

The thought crossed my mind, but I'm not looking to expand into the P38 world.  If it were a built trail rig that just needed a motor now that would be a different story.

Don,

Oh, why do you think I was thinking of you .....?  Didn't Carly Simon sing about that back in the 70s? (my grandmother told me about it)

Graeme

If you were local, I would consider this as a project, but shipping this to SoCal would be nuts, when there are many around... good luck! be patient with the CL types

Keep me posted and let me know if you have any questions. I'd love to see it go to someone on here who will bring it back from the dead and put it to it's intended use (which I never really did).

I wonder if this truck will take a 4.0 from a 98 D1...hmmm. Anyone know if this engine is swappable with the 4.0 even if it's under powered.

Would make my college kid very happy.

Lots of P38s had the 4.0 standard - the 4.6 was only on the higher trim level. The problem you'll have is this is a 2001 which was Bosch engine management and had several different parts. You'd need a Bosch engine from a later D2. If this were an early P38 that had the GEMS engine it would be a direct swap with a late D1 GEMS 4.0.

If you swap over all the intake bits from the Bosch to the gems motor, really the only sticking point is the difference in the crank position sensor mounting between the GEMS and Bosch motor. Cut the mounting bit for the ckps out of the bad Bosch block, remove the mount in the GEMS block and weld the salvaged Bosch bit into place. Make sure to get measurements as to centering and mounting depth of the Bosch mount as it needs to be in the same position.
